Broome Bird Observatory tours

Join our expert interpretive guides as they introduce you to the amazing birdlife of Broome.

There is a tour here to suit everybody. However, if you would like to arrange a special purpose tour, we will be happy to cater for your needs. Special tours should be booked well in advance. It is advised that you contact us at least a week before your arrival.

Please note

  • Children aged 8-12 years are half price for tours. Children under 8 are free of charge. All prices include GST. Bookings are essential for all tours.

  • Tour times vary according to tides and accessibility after the wet. Contact the Observatory to secure your place on the next tour.

  • Tours can only go ahead with at least two participants. You will be notified should a cancellation occur.

A two and a half hour tour which takes you to various birding 'hot-spots' on the bay. You will witness a fantastic array of migratory shorebirds and plenty of locals both at rest and feeding, all against the backdrop of beautiful Roebuck Bay.

Price: $60 per person from the Observatory or $95 per person from Broome. This includes morning or afternoon tea as well as the use of binoculars and telescopes.

Forget the old notions of smelly, nasty, dark, insect-filled and unwelcoming mangrove forests. Our Mangrove Tour will introduce you to a beautiful almost jungle-like ambience which is absolutely bursting with fascinating life forms and teeming with birds. Out the back of the mangroves, we witness tens of thousands of shorebirds foraging on the mudflats at close hand.

Roebuck Bay is home to a vast array of stunning wildlife. We explore the natural grasslands and Acacia woodlands of Roebuck Plains, the ancient floodplain of the Fitzroy River. This area produces an interesting mix of species, including many which are uncommon and usually 'hard to see'.

Price: $60 per person from the Observatory or $95 per person from Broome, and includes morning or afternoon tea as well as the use of binoculars.

A full day discovery tour of the freshwater lakes on Roebuck Plains Station. Discover more waterfowl, including Jabirus and Brolgas as well as migratory shorebirds and the many bush birds which frequent these areas.

Roebuck Plains is the best place in the world to find Yellow Chats and the best way to see them is on a BBO Yellow Chat Twitch! The beautiful and charismatic Yellow Chat is one of the "must see" iconic birds of the Broome region: make certain that you add it to your list when visiting Broome.

Walking tours from the Observatory allow participants to take in the extraordinary beauty of Roebuck Bay whilst discovering a large variety of bush birds and fascinating shorebirds of the area. This tour takes around one hour.

This tour is not on our regular tour schedule but is available on request.
